Apple macOS Ventura announced: your Mac will be closer to the iPhone and inspired by Gmail

Apple has revealed that the next edition of the Mac operating system will be called macOS Ventura. This version of macOS has a lot of features along with some improvements, including Stage Manager, which helps manage open windows.

As expected, the new macOS Ventura is a refinement of the Mac operating system. macOS 13 is clearly not going to revolutionize your use of the Mac. If you only remembered that this new version allows you to use the cameras of an iPhone as a webcam… that’s a shame, because there’s a lot to say.

The iPhone webcam

Thanks to the power of Continuity“, explains Apple, “ your Mac can automatically recognize and use the iPhone’s camera when it’s nearby — without needing to unlock or select it.“. It’s true that the demo can make you smile with this photo. We wish Apple had equipped its older Macs with better cameras… but you can also use the iPhone’s ultra-wide camera to enable desk-view, which simultaneously displays the user’s face and an overhead view of their desktop. Practice.

Stage Manager to help messy people

Apple has also upgraded the interface dedicated to open windows, it’s called Internship Manager. This feature automatically organizes open applications and windows so users can focus on their work and see everything at a glance.

The current window is displayed prominently in the center, and as you see above, other open windows appear on the left side so that one can quickly and easily switch between tasks. Users can also group windows together when working on specific tasks or projects that require different applications. This new function is added to Mission Control and Spaces, with the shortcut bar still on the bottom of the screen being simplified. And finally… this function is compatible with external screens.

Oh a function for me who always have an unbelievable bronx on my screen: Stage Manager to open and manage several apps together, by group. The display is clearer. #wwdc2 pic.twitter.com/yhdHwOH4Tr

Function Handoff now comes to FaceTime. Basically, you can start a FaceTime call on your iPhone and seamlessly transfer it to another nearby Apple device.

From now on, you will be able to browse the web with several people

Apple promised us an even lighter and more secure Safari…but the funniest feature is a powerful new way for users to browse together: with shared tab groups, friends, family and colleagues can share their favorite sites in Safari and see which tabs others are viewing live. So you can browse the web as if you were all working on the same Google Docs document.

By the way, Safari also supports passkeys (security key). No more passwords, Apple integrates unique digital keys that stay on the device and are never stored on a web server, with the aim of simplifying login by using Touch ID or Face ID for biometric verification, and iCloud Keychain for syncing across Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV with end-to-end encryption.

Mail copy Gmail

If you’re using the Mail app, Apple has improved the search system to provide more relevant, accurate, and comprehensive results. Mail will fetch recent emails, contacts, documents, photos, and more, all before you even start typing. You’ll also be able to schedule emails and even unsend after hitting send… Mail now detects if things like an attachment or CC recipient are missing from their message.

There are also reminders to return to a message at a particular date and time, as well as automatic suggestions to follow up on an email if there’s been no response. In short, Mail looks like Gmail.

New, more powerful and practical Spotlight

The built-in search in macOS, Spotlight for Intimate, has also been redone. You can now find images in the Photo Library, system-wide, and on the web. Spotlight searches photos by location, people, scenes, or objects, and Live Text lets you search by text within images. As with Siri, you can even start a timer, create a new document or run a shortcut.

Spotlight is much more complete

Finally, Spotlight now includes rich results for artists, movies, actors, and TV shows, as well as business and sports.

That’s not all… since the Weather and Clock applications, those on iPhone, have been optimized for Mac. There are plenty of other smaller changes like a facelift to the settings menus, Apple promises this new interface will be easier to navigate and should approximate the OS of the iPhone and iPad.

There are also novelties on the side of Metal 3… a little hope for macophiles who dream of playing with their machine.

Availability and compatibility

The macOS Ventura developer beta is available through the Apple Developer Program starting today. A public beta will be available in July at beta.apple.com. As for the final version, it will be available this fall as a free software update.

As you can see, compatibility has been limited:

  • 2017 and newer iMacs;
  • MacBook Air 2018 and beyond;
  • MacBook Pro 2017 and newer;
  • the Mac Pro 2019;
  • 2018 and newer Mac minis;
  • 2017 MacBooks.

All Macs from 2015 and 2016 are therefore out of the gameApple has restricted access to its new OS much more than the previous version.
