Earlier this week, Apple Music informed its label partners of an exciting update: music with spatial audio will now earn 10% more. Relaying the content of this new policy, 9to5Mac explains that remuneration will be allocated to titles available in this format, whether or not they are listened to by users.

To convince labels to take the plunge, the music streaming platform adds that 90% of its users have already listened to spatial audio content, but also that the number of listenings to the latter has tripled in two years. What’s more, 80% of the sounds in Apple Music’s Top 100 over the past few years were available in this format.

9to5Mac specifies that “Even before today’s announcement, the number of songs available in spatial audio has increased by nearly 5,000% since the feature launched in 2021, and that number has more than doubled in the last year alone..

To ensure quality spatial audio music, Music Business Worldwide, which was also able to examine the content of this Apple Music update, emphasizes that the Apple firm mentioned “a zero tolerance policy against misleading or manipulative content and that this also applied to spatial audio content”.

Apple specifies that its teams have implemented “a quality monitoring process that includes reporting content that is not delivered according to specifications and quality standards for spatial audio on Apple Music”.

This new Apple Music compensation policy will come into effect with the payment of royalties in January 2024.
