The Mac Studio has never been cheaper directly from Apple. This is changing now, because the powerful desktop computer can be found in the refurbished store for the first time. But is the offer really worth it? We did the math.
The Mac Studio was only introduced in March 2022. The computer, which is positioned between Mac mini and Mac Pro, is now available for purchase in Apple’s refurbished store (see Apple). Cheaper than the regular new price, but also cheaper than in free trade?
Price check: Mac Studio in Apple’s refurbished store
For example, there is the basic model with the M1 Max chip (10 core CPU and 24 core GPU). Regularly costs 2,299 euros from Apple, but we can get it as a refurbished model for 2,069 euros. However, the price comparison reveals that we sometimes pay even less in retail (currently from 2039 euros, see price comparison at idealo.de). Ergo: Buying from Apple is less worthwhile here.
This looks a little different with the more expensive models. For example, Apple normally charges 4,599 euros for the version of the Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra chip (20 core CPU and 48 core GPU), in the refurbished store only 4,139 euros are due. And the offer still stands up to the price comparison. In retail, we currently pay at least 4,359 euros (see price comparison at idealo.de). So the bottom line is still 220 euros cheaper.

To buy or not to buy?
Our assessment: You should always check the prices in the refurbished store on a case-by-case basis. The cheaper versions of the Mac Studio offer hardly any real price advantages compared to the new devices in the open market. If the models are more expensive, you can save more. An important advantage of the refurbished store: The devices are immediately available and there are no long delivery times.
By the way, there are almost no disadvantages compared to new devices. Apple puts every computer through its paces and, where necessary, replaces components with original spare parts. In addition, it is thoroughly cleaned. On top of that, there’s the regular manufacturer’s guarantee. The computers are also qualified for Apple Care and can thus be protected even better against damage.
