For several days now, some iPhone users have been reporting a smartphone that tends to turn off by itself at night…
Various testimonials, on social networks as well as on the forums of MacRumors, report iPhones that can spend part of the night completely turned off, before waking up a few hours later, so that some users have to enter their startup code when waking up. A problem to say the least surprising, and to which Apple has still not found a solution.
A bug that prevents iPhones from sleeping
According to 9to5Mac, many users have in fact been victims of this bug, the iPhones in question all having the same common denominator: iOS 17. The recent iPhone 15s are thus the first to be affected, but also certain previous generation iPhones. They all present the same symptom, namely a power outage, more or less prolonged, during the night.
To find out if an iPhone has turned off overnight, simply go to the Settings section, before opting for Battery, to check the charging status over the last 24 hours. This is where you can see if the iPhone has been turned off for a while. Likewise, if your iPhone requires you to enter the startup code when you wake up, it is because it has indeed turned off during the night.
A bug still present in iOS 17.1?
At present, it seems that this bug is inherent to iOS 17.0.3, but the future update (iOS 17.1) which will be deployed in a few days, does not seem to remedy the problem. No fixes would be present in the latest RC beta.
According to some, the bug only occurs at night, when the iPhone is charging, suggesting a safety measure to avoid possible overheating. Others, however, indicate that the problem occurred on an iPhone which was not charging.
It’s difficult to know what fly has once again bitten Apple’s iPhones. For the moment, the American giant has not reacted regarding this umpteenth iOS 17 hiccup.

- A design that gains in elegance
- The disappearing notch
- Ultra bright screen
The iPhone 15 does better than its predecessor, and on every level! Equipped with a superb, very bright screen (but still 60 Hz), finally free of its notch, it is already establishing itself as a wonderful traveling companion for years to come.
More versatile than ever in photography, thanks to its new sensor offering 2x digital zoom which was sorely lacking in previous models, it clearly overshadows the iPhone 15 Pro. However, keep in mind that autonomy is a real stone in the shoe of this model, which makes us prefer the iPhone 15 Plus this year. Despite everything, we appreciate the move to USB-C, even if the USB 2.0 standard is far too dated.
The fact remains that Apple is making all the right choices this year to bring its “standard” range up to speed, where the Pro models tended to take too big a lead in terms of design as well as in terms of performance.
