If the freshly arrived M2 chip has definitely proven itself in the new macbook pro m2this is apparently not the case with his SSD.

According to numerous tests, the version with a storage capacity of 256 GB would be significantly slower than that of the previous MacBook Pro M1.

Two weights, two measures

Max Tech and Created Techtwo well-known YouTube channels in the industry, discovered via Blackmagic Speed Test that the 256 GB SSD of the MacBook Pro M2 shows read and write speeds far below those of the previous model.

More precisely, it would be 34% slower in terms of write speed than its predecessor, and 50% slower in reading speed. In concrete terms, the benchmark used displayed the following values for the two SSDs tested:

  • M1 MacBook Pro SSD: 2900 MB/s (read) and 2215 MB/s (write);
  • M2 MacBook Pro SSD: 1446 MB/s (read) and 1463 MB/s (write).

Note that these significant performance disparities would only affect the SSD with a capacity of 256 GB. The 512 GB version of the MacBook Pro M2 would display read and write speeds equivalent to its counterpart present in the MacBook. Pro M1.

Why such a difference in performance?

To find out the end of the story on this incredible situation, to say the least, Created Tech went digging into the innards of the MacBook Pro M2 with a 256GB SSD. And it looks like an organ was pulled out along the way.

The MacBook Pro M1 had two 128 GB NAND chips for a total of 256 GB, while the MacBook Pro M2 only has one NAND chip. This explains why the performance of this SSD is practically halved.

Those looking for a product that can handle different tasks faster may therefore be put off by the new version of the MacBook Pro. The presence of a single NAND chip would indicate Apple’s desire to reduce costs.

At present, therefore, nothing seems to justify the acquisition of a MacBook Pro M2 with a 256 GB SSD at the expense of its predecessor. Unless Apple revises its copy, this does not bode well for this model.

This case also raises another question: what about the MacBook Air M2, expected in the coming weeks? If the Apple is able to make sacrifices on a “Pro” model, what prevents it from doing the same on more modest models?
