Apple’s latest TV box has the same processor as the iPhone 13, but a little less powerful.
A few days ago, the latest Apple TV 4K was released, the latest revision of the TV box produced by the manufacturer.
An almost identical, but more powerful Apple TV 4K
Compared to the 2021 Apple TV 4K, not much has changed. The design is much the same, apart from a reduction in size and thickness of the case by 20%. The remote control, introduced with this latest version, also remains identical, except for its USB-C port instead of the Lightning port of the previous edition.
The real hardware novelty is inside with the adoption of a new processor. For this latest box, the manufacturer offers one of its most recent chips, the A15 Bionic, which replaces the A12 Bionic. Indeed, it currently equips the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro.
The Apple brand also promises 50% more performance on the CPU part and 30% GPU improvements compared to the Apple TV 4K 2021. But the processor at work in this new box does not is not strictly identical to that of the iPhone…
A planed processor to limit heating… and costs
According to website information FlatpanelsHD, the A15 Bionic SoC of the Apple TV 4K 2022 would have 5 CPU cores instead of 6 on the brand’s smartphones. The GPU would also be a little less endowed, with 4 cores instead of 5.
Several reasons can explain the integration of this slower chip. The first is purely economic. Apple has been able, as it has already done in the past on its MacBook Air M1 ranges, to recycle processor “offcuts” on its production lines in order to limit production costs.
The second reason may be the disappearance of the fan from the device. To limit the heating, the brand has probably chosen to restrict the performance of its latest box, which nevertheless remains very high compared to many of its competitors and sufficient for the games available on the App Store as well as for watching streaming videos on the various SVoD platforms.
