The manufacturer is today presenting a new Apple Pencil model for its various tablets. This version is less expensive than the previous ones, but loses some features in the process.

Rumors have been buzzing in recent days about the possible presentation of new iPads, but it is ultimately nothing of the sort. Instead, Apple is today launching a new accessory, the Apple Pencil USB-C, which is added to the two existing generations. For this model, the Cupertino manufacturer has not sought to reinvent the wheel, and offers a stylus which takes up the aesthetic lines and design of the second generation Apple Pencil, with some improvements which should appeal to iPad owners .

An Apple Pencil 2, with USB-C port for charging

This new Apple Pencil therefore adopts the more compact format of the Apple Pencil 2, with a matte finish and hollowed out edges to make it easier to hold. This model, however, abandons the area near the tip and sensitive to pressure, probably for reasons of economy. This allows you, by tapping twice, to change pens or tools so as not to have to return to the menus of the running application.

Apple is abandoning the Lightning port even further with this new model, only compatible with iPads equipped with a USB-C port. The Apple Pencil has a hidden connector in the cap, which slides out to reveal it. This new stylus also has a magnetic area, to magnetize it to iPads equipped with this functionality, but it will not charge by induction, unlike the Apple Pencil 2. Instead, the accessory will go to sleep to preserve the battery.

With this new system, Apple intends to make disappear for good this aesthetic aberration that was the first generation Apple Pencil, which had to be connected to the iPad via its Lightning port. A horror from which fans of the brand are still struggling to recover.

A slightly less efficient Apple Pencil, and a little more affordable

If the last two Apple Pencils look almost identical, this new model skips two features. In addition to induction charging, this new entry-level model does not offer pressure sensitivity. Users will have to play with the different tools of their drawing software to obtain the results closest to their desires.

For the rest, this Apple Pencil USB-C maintains the same level of precision, sensitivity to inclination or even the appearance of the pointer on the screen when the stylus hovers over it on the iPad Pro.

The Apple Pencil USB-C will only be available from the beginning of November at a price of 95 euros. This is almost 50 euros less than the Apple Pencil 2. Despite a price which remains high, but this time below the symbolic bar of 100 euros, Apple seems to want to convince a still reluctant public, in particular students or the self-employed.

This new model is compatible with all iPad, iPad Air, iPad Mini and iPad Pro USB-C.

What are the best iPads? Comparison 2023
