Apple’s Monarch series renewed for season 2, several Godzilla spin-offs announced

The Monsterverse, which includes Godzilla and the Titans, continues to expand on television. After the success of the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+, Legendary Entertainment and Apple’s SVOD service have decided to renew the series with Kurt Russell for a season 2. But that’s not all!

The two companies have also reached an agreement to create several series based on this titanic franchise. Monarch will therefore in the future be accompanied by spin-offs on Apple TV+.

“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has left a lasting impression on the hearts, minds and imaginations of audiences around the world, thanks to the brilliant work of Chris, Matt, Kurt, Wyatt and the rest of their incredibly talented team.”said Morgan Wandell, who is head of international development at Apple TV+.

“We can’t wait for viewers to not only have the opportunity to thrill to Season 2, but also to embark on epic new adventures in this franchise as we expand Legendary’s Monsterverse.”

In Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, fans of Godzilla and company were able to discover a new side of the Monsterverse. The series explores the origins and motivations of the secret organization Monarch, while following how the story of a brother and sister searching for their father is linked to it.

Broadcast from November 2023 on Apple TV+ (and Canal+/myCanal), the series notably features Kurt Russell (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) and Wyatt Russell (Falcon and the Winter Soldier), who play the same character in different eras, but also Anai Sawai (Shōgun), Kiersey Clemons (The Flash) and Ren Watabe (461 Days of Bento). Its second season will, like the first, be led by co-showrunners Chris Black and Matt Fraction, also executive producers.

It’s not yet clear what the series’ spin-offs will be about, but there’s enough material in the Monsterverse for the franchise to expand. At the cinema, the latest film in the saga to date, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empiredemonstrates once again at the box office that, despite more than mixed reviews, the universe of the Monsterverse continues to fascinate the public.

To date, the film has already grossed more than $380 million worldwide. Just like seeing big monsters bumping into each other, we never get tired of it.
