Authorities from France, the Netherlands, Norway, Ukraine, the USA and Switzerland were involved in the action.

As part of this action, the Zurich public prosecutor’s office is conducting criminal proceedings against an accused person, as the cantonal police and the public prosecutor’s office announced on Friday morning. Cyber investigators from the cantonal police have intensively evaluated the data carriers seized from this person over the past few months. Numerous “private keys” are revealed. Damaged companies and institutions could use these keys to restore the data previously encrypted with the “LockerGoga” or “MegaCortex” malware. In cooperation with Europol, the “No More Ransom” project and the company Bitdefender, a tool is now being made available that supports the victims in decrypting LockerGoga. This is under the website www.nomoreransom.org available. Victims who are affected by attacks with the malicious programs mentioned are urgently requested to file a criminal complaint if they have not already done so.

The cybercrime phenomenon “ransomware” refers to the encryption of data on IT networks. The victim is then asked to pay a ransom to restore the data. There has been an increase in this phenomenon worldwide for several years.

The suspected perpetrators are accused of being involved in ransomware attacks on over 1,800 people and institutions in 71 countries and of having caused an estimated total damage of several 100 million Swiss francs.
