E.in Pharisees and a tax collector go up to a temple to pray. The Pharisee thanks God that he is not like other people, not a robber or a deceiver, and not a tax collector. He fasts twice a week and also gives tenth of his income to the temple – a man who is utterly convinced of his impeccable lifestyle and who abuses the faith to glorify himself in his hubris.
The customs officer, meanwhile, stays in the background, does not dare to raise his eyes to heaven, hits his chest and prays: God, have mercy on me as a sinner! “I tell you: this one returned home righteous, the other not. Because whoever exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humiliates himself will be exalted. ”
