Very easy to access, and able to produce a large amount of content on demand, these AIs are both a blessing for creators, but also for all those who wish to harm other people, as has been shown again Taylor Swift’s deepfake scandal. So, it seems necessary to quickly put a police officer in place. And it could be the CNIL!
The CNIL in the age of AI
The first parliamentary report devoted to artificial intelligence was presented this Wednesday, February 14 to the Law Committee of the National Assembly. Supported by RN deputy Stéphane Rambaud and Horizons deputy Philippe Pradal, it includes a total of 33 proposals to regulate this new sector of activity.
And one of the main ones is to “ transform the CNIL into a high authority in charge of data protection and control of artificial intelligence. “A change which will require a profound change in administrative authority, which would then be seen in the future” equipped with a large number of experts and technicians able to control complex algorithms. »
Generative AI already taken into account for a year
This proposal does not come out of nowhere. The CNIL very quickly took into account the changes that a ChatGPT would bring to public life, and first created a service dedicated to AI in January 2023 before presenting an action plan in May. A laudable initiative according to the authors of the report, but which would be far from sufficient.
“ The economic players in the sector seem (…) share the feeling that the CNIL does not have sufficient means to effectively control this new sector » they explained. Enough to demand better “armament” from the CNIL in the future?
