The triumph of Pop Art
In 1964, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg and Ed Ruscha were at the top of their game: the record auction price for each of these four artists was recorded by a picture painted that year, in the midst of the Cold War, a few just months after the assassination of President JF Kennedy. These records, to which must be added more than thirteen thousand results, make 1964 the year that generated the greatest value in auction rooms for twenty-three years, all periods of creation combined: $2.48 billion .

(1964) by Andy Warhol acts as a sort of figurehead, she who collected the second highest auction of all time at $ 195 million, on May 9, 2022 at Christie’s in New York. The previous two years were just as important for Warhol, but in 1964 Robert Rauschenberg won the grand prize at the Venice Biennale. Pushed by Leo Castelli and perhaps even supported by the CIA, Pop-art then imposed itself in the world: some cried foul while others saw in it the swing of art towards the West, a transfer of power between Paris and New York on the international scene.

Abstraction, Pop Art and Expressionism
In the mid-1960s, several giants of the first half of the 20th century were still creating important works: Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, René Magritte were indeed still active. In Asia, Li Keran and Fu Baoshi perpetuate the art of traditional Chinese painting by giving it a very personal touch of modernity, while in Europe Zao Wou-Ki participates with some compatriots in the adventure of painting. ‘Lyrical Abstraction. In England, a new generation is essential: David Hockney was 27 years old in 1964, Frank Auerbach 33 years old and Lucien Freud 42 years old. They were only at the beginning of their careers, but Francis Bacon, 55, produced some of his best portraits that year.
In the United States, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Willem De Kooning or Clyfford Still have not yet finished with Abstract Expressionism, only Jackson Pollock has been gone for a few years now and another revolution is underway with Pop Art. It is this movement which will end up truly imposing America on the international artistic scene, at the same time as on the Art Market, thanks to brilliant works even if they often hide a criticism of the
American dream
. In France, Pierre Soulages had already painted his best canvases, but a new expressionist scene was beginning to emerge in Germany, with Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke, Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, etc. Their work will unfold over many years and therefore will not produce the same concentration of value as American Pop Art.
The success of this movement is due in particular to the fact that the interest of collectors is focused on a few series of works, on which the great names of American Pop Art worked and reworked for a few years… around 1964.
