In 2021, Windows 11 was to herald the succession of Microsoft’s operating systems. However, almost three years after its launch, it is its predecessor, Windows 10which is experiencing an unexpected resurgence in popularity.

StatCounter, an organization specializing in statistics (operating systems, web browsers, etc.), draws up a surprising observation to say the least: in April 2024, Windows 10 crossed the 70% market share mark for the first time since September 2023 This rise came at the expense of Windows 11 which, after peaking at 28.16% in February, fell below 26%.

Windows 10 continues its rise, and Windows 11 is stuck in its fall

As it approaches its tenth anniversary, Windows 10 has almost never been more popular than it is today. While the OS will no longer be officially supported by Microsoft as of October 25, 2025, it recently benefited from a new update aimed at reducing the size of downloads. Regardless, the elder Windows 11 undoubtedly seems to be on the rise. Indeed, Windows 10 has just seen its market share increase by 0.96 points between March and April, going from 69.07% to 70.03%.

For Windows 11, the situation is not as promising. While it reached a historic peak of 28.16% market share in February 2024, the latest version of Windows has since never stopped seeing its market share fall. Still according to StatCounter data, Windows 11 lost 0.97 points last April, going from 26.68% to 25.65% of market share.

An uncertain future for Windows 11?

According to our colleagues at Neowin, several factors can explain this phenomenon. Experts point to the lack of concrete benefits offered by Windows 11, thus providing little to no tangible benefit to justify an upgrade. Worse still, the removal of some initially promised features, such as the Windows Subsystem for Android, has caused confusion among users.

Added to this are the many prerequisites to be able to install Windows 11 or even the question of advertising. Indeed, the proliferation of advertising inserts, often considered unacceptable, does not speak in favor of the new version of Windows. It is difficult, under these conditions, to convince users to migrate to an operating system that does not meet their expectations and offers an experience that is sometimes, if not frequently, intrusive.

Although it is worth remembering that the statistics communicated by StatCounter are not an exact science, they nevertheless allow us to get an idea of the trends within Microsoft’s operating systems. Let’s now hope that the release of Windows 11 24H2 at the end of the year will allow the OS to get its act together and win over the hearts of users. This will probably be his last chance to achieve this…
