Egypt wants Olympic Games in 2036

Egypt’s President Al-Sisi has had an “Olympic City” built not far from Cairo for a long time. His sports minister is now specifying the country’s ambition to host the Games in 2036. With Germany and Israel, Egypt could still face stiff competition – in conjunction with one another.

Egypt wants to be the first African country to host the Olympic Games in 2036. Sports minister Ashraf Sobhi told Sky News Arabia TV station that Egypt would soon submit an official application to the International Olympic Committee. At the major sporting event, Egypt wanted to represent the Arab world and the African continent. The country has recently made great strides in terms of its sports facilities.

Other countries are already being discussed as possible hosts for the Olympic Games in 2036. There is interest from Russia, for example. In addition, there is the idea that Berlin and Tel Aviv should apply together to host the Games, 100 years after the Berlin Games in 1936 in National Socialist Germany.

The new President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, Thomas Weikert, already has a new attempt at a German Olympic application on his agenda – but not at any price. “Only when we have an idea of what we want to achieve, shape and change with games can we inspire people with it,” he said recently.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is building a lot in the country, including a new capital around 50 kilometers east of Cairo. The International Olympic City is also being built nearby with the aim of promoting sport and improving the chances of hosting major sporting events. A stadium for 90,000 spectators, two covered arenas for a total of 23,000 spectators as well as facilities for swimming, riding and other sports are planned.
