Ashes, an official Ankama share for Wakfu: Guardians

Almost a year and a half after the return of WLG, or Wakfu: The Guardians, Ankama is providing its official support for the project. A mark, especially symbolic, very important and ultimately quite rare in the world of video games.

Wakfu: The Guardians – Ashes officially promoted by Ankama

As we wrote in April 2021, a group of players took over the development of the MMO abandoned after the end of the broadcast of season 1 of Wakfu (plus a small delay), in 2011. A big project, started a few years before , and culminating in the opening of a fanmade server, free for all.

However, Ankama remained rather discreet. No communication on official channels and a simple tolerance of the project, as long as it was not monetized. This position was already a big step for the Ashes team. If we can think that it is common, it is worth remembering that in 2022, many video game companies prefer to definitively close their game by sometimes continuing fangames or attempts at resurrection. How not to mention Nintendo, sending “Cease and Desist” with a vengeance.

The story doesn’t end there for Wakfu: The Guardians. During the year of release, the administrators were able to unlock the contents of the game one by one. to keep the community alive and to regularly offer activities, until the last chapter very recently.

A final word?

As if to form a nice conclusion, Ankama finally communicated today on Ashes. Thus, the company thus fully disseminates a message of support. Beyond a simple tolerance, it is rare to see confidence in a fangame written in this way.

We are very happy and touched by this community initiative and hope that it will still have long days ahead of it!

Communication Ankama, October 13, 2022

As for the future of the project as seen by the Ashes team, everything already seems on the table. It continues to provide moderation and bug fixes “for a while, indefinitely.” The game is now complete and unlike Dofus Retro, the whole thing seems satisfactory in practice, now depending above all on the motivation and the time available. Moreover, as specified in the FAQ of the project, the reappearance of the sequel to Wakfu: The guardians is unlikely.

It’s still not in our plans to come out of the mist Wakfu: Guardians Season 2 which was another game we don’t love enough to put countless hours into bringing it back and then maintaining it.
