Assassination of Judge François Renaud: who was he investigating before his death?

Murdered by several bullets in front of his home, Judge François Renaud died in Lyon on the night of July 2 to 3, 1975. According to the very thorough investigation, the motives for the crime are clear: the latter was trying to bring down two very dangerous organizations.

The story had made the front page of all the media. On the night of July 2 or 3, 1975, Judge François Renaud was assassinated in Lyon. The one who called himself “The Sheriff”, because of all the malicious organizations he managed to bring down, was killed by several bullets, just at the foot of his building, located in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon. For the record, this crime was the first time that a magistrate has been executed in France since the Liberation.

Judge François Renaud fell under the bullets of a commando, a deliberate and premeditated action to put a big brake on justice. Because at the time of his death, the magistrate was investigating the actions of several dangerous groups in Lyon : the civic action service (SAC) and the famous gang of Lyonnais, a group of professional robbers almost impossible to catch. Two hypotheses then opened up: was François Renaud the target of bandits from Lyon or the victim of a political assassination involving the SAC, a pharmacy close to power?

Judge François Renaud was riddled with bullets just outside his home

Because one of the last files of judge François Renaud concerned the breakage of the Post office of Strasbourg, in 1971, which had seen the gang of Lyons pocketing more than 11 million francs. It must be said that the one who called himself the Sheriff was not afraid to directly confront his potential suspects. After nearly two decades of investigation, the death of judge François Renaud has never been elucidated : a dismissal was pronounced in 1992. Suffice to say that the assassin(s) will never be unmasked. His life almost deserves a movie…
