In appearance, Jodie is a teenager like the others. But when a truck that has fallen from an overpass crashes into the young boy, suspicions about him arise. Why is he still alive? How could he survive without any scratches?
Very quickly, the abilities of the hero want to be more and more visible. He can turn water into wine, save a deaf man, and seems to hear voices. What if Jodie, who knows nothing of the identity of her father, was actually the son of God?
The Chosen One, a new six-episode series available on Netflix, is the adaptation of the comics created by Mark Miller (Kick Kass, Kingsman) and Peter Gross. The action, which takes place in the United States in the original story, is here relocated to Mexico and opens with a very violent scene. An astonishing starting point and which arouses our curiosity when we know that the series nevertheless seems intended for an audience of adolescents.
This is the case for the rest of the plot where The Chosen One presents itself as a funny mix between Stand by Me – for its tight-knit group of teenagers – and Stranger Things – the limitless powers are not unlike those from Eleven. The series offers an interesting artistic bias with a 4:3 image format and very naturalistic photography that comes to seek Terrence Malick’s side – the comparison stops there.
If The Chosen One is an interesting fiction for its mysticism and its original postulate, it remains nonetheless terribly predictable. We guess, from the first episode, where the series will take us and what secret it will reveal to us about its main character. The height: it is necessary to await the end of the last episode so that the intrigue finally decides to spit the piece. An end which announces, moreover, a season 2. Hoping that it surprises a little more.
