BUJUMBURA (Reuters) – At least 20 people were killed and nine others injured by armed men in an attack in western Burundi, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Burundian government said on Saturday.

The Red Tabara organization, an armed group that has been fighting the Burundi government since 2015, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Twelve children, two pregnant women and a police officer were killed during the raid carried out Friday evening in the town of Vugizo, said government spokesperson Jérôme Niyonzima.

Red Tabara claimed on the social network X, formerly Twitter, to have killed nine soldiers and a police officer.

Residents said they heard gunfire and explosions during the attack.
