The mountain tour of a group of 14 on Thursday on the Speikkogel in Styria ended in tragedy: a 72-year-old man from Graz fell down a steep slope and died.
According to the police, the hiking group marched from the Speikkogel down to the Peterer saddle and back to the reservoir via the marked hiking trail. At noon, the tragedy struck: the 73-year-old from Graz, who was about ten meters behind the group, fell about 50 meters down a steep slope. Two other mountaineers from the group witnessed the accident. They immediately set the rescue chain in motion and provided first aid. However, the emergency doctor of the rescue helicopter Christophorus 12 could only determine the death of the 73-year-old. The body was recovered by the police helicopter “Libelle Steiermark”. The Voitsberg and Köflach mountain rescue services were also deployed.
