He also raised his voice against the Assad regime. Now the novelist and screenwriter has died of a heart attack.

The Aleppo-born author was a well-known critic of the Assad regime and remained in his country despite the repression and war. “I stay because it is my country,” Khalifa said in a 2019 interview. “I was born there, I live there, I want to die there.”

Khalifa’s best-known works include “No One Prayed at Their Graves,” “In Praise of Hatred,” “No Knives in the Kitchens of This City,” and “Death is a Hard Business.” Several of Khalifa’s works have been translated into other languages.

Dissident spirit

Khaled Khalifa repeatedly found himself in the focus of the censorship authorities of the Syrian Assad regime. Parts of his works were banned. Khalifa also wrote scripts for films and television series.

Khalifa died on September 30, 2023 at the age of 59 at his home in the Syrian capital Damascus, his family said. They say he suffered a heart attack.
