At the municipal theater – “Le nozze di Figaro”: A comedy with a bite

She has been directing since 1992, and in the meantime the singer, author and artistic director Brigitte Fassbaender is one of the most renowned opera directors of our time. More than 80 productions go to her account, in Klagenfurt the 82-year-old makes her city theater debut with “Le nozze di Figaro” by Mozart.

For the Berliner, directing means “stimulating the imagination, inspiring, exchanging experiences, breaking down scruples and inner barriers”, with music being the strongest source of inspiration for the highly decorated opera, lied and concert singer.

The first, socially critical and enlightening work in opera history is “Figaro’s Wedding”, which is based on Beaumarchai’s excitement of 1778, which ridiculed the corrupt nobility. Mozart librettist Da Ponte managed the feat of removing blue-blooded allusions while remaining ironic and snappy.
