According to the article of April 20, 2012 on the conditions for establishing, issuing and validating a driving license, a minor can drive a two-wheeler from the age of 14. However, that doesn’t mean he can ride a 125cc motorcycle straight away. Upon obtaining the BSR (Road Safety Certificate) at college, a minor is authorized to drive a 50 cc scooter, a quad or certain cars without a license, such as the Citroën AMI. For larger motorcycles, you have to be older.
Light motorcycles and 3-wheel scooters accessible from 16 years old
If a teenager passes the A1 license at 16 years old, he or she is authorized to drive motorcycles up to 125 cc. Be careful, because the vehicle’s power is also limited to 11 kW for these young drivers. Note that it is possible for them to add a sidecar if their motorcycle can be equipped with one. From the age of 18, young drivers can obtain the A2 license and increase the maximum authorized power they can drive. They then increase to a power of 35 kW, but a small displacement remains recommended.
A license required and being at least 20 years old to drive any type of motorcycle
To benefit from engine capacities exceeding 125 cm3, drivers must obtain an A license. However, you must have been driving for at least two years with an A2 license to pass it, or have a B license for those over 21. If the A license is validated, it is then possible to drive a two- or three-wheeled motorcycle without any restriction on power or engine capacity. Driving with a sidecar is also permitted.
