As you may have noticed, VPN services have been omnipresent for several years. And for good reason: whether to access the foreign catalog of an SVOD platform, or to protect oneself from the curiosity of governments or malicious actors, virtual private networks have become essential tools.
So much so that many companies have launched into this niche. NordVPN, ProtonVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost… Users are spoiled for choice, which is a good thing for them, but not necessarily for the providers themselves, who have to face increasingly tough competition . And, among those that no longer hold up against the rest of the industry, there is Atlas VPN.
The company has, in fact, just announced that it is ending its activities. She explains on her site that the service is no longer financially viable in the long term, due to “rapidly changing technological requirements, a highly competitive market and escalating costs associated with providing premium services“. Atlas VPN teams and users have one month to pack their boxes, with the adventure ending on April 24, 2024.
A migration to NordVPN, but not for everyone
If you subscribe to Atlas VPN’s paid services, don’t panic. You will be automatically transferred to NordVPN, and will have access to its premium features at the same price as today, until the end of your subscription period. The story is different for those who subscribed via the Apple App Store, because the company does not have a migration solution to offer them. They will therefore be reimbursed.
Finally, users of Atlas VPN’s free features are not entitled to any special treatment. They are free to join the services of Nord Security, or to look elsewhere.
The passing of the torch to NordVPN is not a surprise, since its publisher took Atlas VPN under its wing in 2021. The latter was then already in difficulty, and the portfolio and expertise of Nord Security were ultimately not enough to put out the fire. It remains to be seen, moreover, whether Surfshark will suffer the same fate in the long term, having merged with its Nordic counterpart in 2022.
