For Daniil Medvedev, the dream of a second triumph at the ATP Finals after 2020 is over. After the opening defeat against Andrei Rublev, the Russian also lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Medvedev won a decisive set in a spectacular tie-break of the second set, but he had no chance in the short decision there.
Tsitsipas with his back to the wall
Tsitsipas earned the win with a fighting performance. In the 3rd set, Medvedev made the break to make it 4:3 – his only break in the entire game – and served at 5:4 to win the match. But the Russian’s hand was shaking, so that the 2019 finals winner managed the rebreak to 5: 5 at the last opportunity.
Tsitsipas had three chances to end the game just under an hour before scoring the match point. In the tie-break of the 2nd set, he was unable to use three match points – all of them on his opponent’s serve.
In the first set, the Greek still dominated his opponent with his serve-and-volley game and short rallies.
Here’s how to proceed
While the series is back to the green group on Thursday, in which Félix Auger-Aliassime and Taylor Fritz make up the second semi-finalist alongside Casper Ruud, Medvedev and Tsitsipas are back in action on Friday.
The Greek will make up the second semi-final ticket next to Djokovic in a direct duel with Rublev. The Serb’s game against Medvedev becomes a final game.
