Two Asian women were injured in a knife attack in San Francisco. As the US police announced on Tuesday evening (local time), the incident occurred in the afternoon in downtown California.
Hours later, a 54-year-old suspect was arrested, said a police spokesman for the broadcaster CBS. The man lives in San Francisco. At first it was not known whether the crime had a racist background.
The 85 and 65 year old victims were attacked at a bus stop, the broadcaster reported. Both should have been operated on in the hospital. The elderly woman was seriously injured from stitches in the chest and arm. “The attacker went up to his victims, stabbed them and then left casually in broad daylight,” said an eyewitness. “There is clearly a pattern to target Asian residents, especially seniors,” City and District Councilor Matt Haney told the San Francisco Cronicle.
Attacks on Asians are increasing
The number of acts of violence against Asiatic people or people of Asian descent in the USA has recently increased significantly. A similar case only became known in New York on Monday. A 31-year-old was attacked with a hammer and injured. There have also been several physical attacks of this type in the past few months in San Francisco and the surrounding area.
The US Department of Justice has observed a “significant increase in attacks and harassment” motivated by prejudice against Americans of Asian origin. Various congressmen see a connection with the corona pandemic.
