(dpa) Right-wing extremist Brenton Tarrant, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the deadly attacks on two mosques in New Zealand, wants to challenge the verdict. As the competent court of appeal announced on Tuesday, the Australian has lodged a formal objection to the August 2020 judgment. At that time he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of early release, among other things for 51 murders.

The Court of Appeal did not name a date for the forthcoming hearing in the case, nor did it give a substantive justification for the legal action taken by the right-wing terrorist, who had pleaded guilty in the proceedings at the time.

In March 2019, Tarrant attacked two mosques in the city of Christchurch and shot 51 people in the most serious attack in the recent history of the Pacific state. Dozens more were injured, some critically. Many survivors are still suffering from the consequences today. The perpetrator transmitted the meticulously planned massacre live to the Internet using a helmet camera.
