After a new attack on elected officials Wednesday in the Oise, the president (LREM) of the National Assembly Richard Ferrand announced on Thursday that he will make a “precise point” in January with the Interior Ministers Gerald Darmanin and of Justice Éric Dupond-Moretti. The executive intends to strengthen the protection of elected officials, who are particularly threatened by health measures.

The personal garage of LREM deputy for Oise Pascal Bois in Chambly was damaged by a fire on Wednesday night, and hostile inscriptions possibly linked to the vaccine pass tagged on a perimeter wall of his home. Faced with the resurgence of death threats against deputies, a referent was appointed at the end of November within the services of the National Assembly to “collect reports” and “advise” elected officials in their possible steps. Thursday, Gérald Darmanin announced that he wanted to strengthen their protection.

Potential threats or acting out

In a telegram that Europe 1 was able to consult, Gérald Darmanin did indeed pass several instructions. The strongest thing is that the police systematically pass in front of the homes and offices of elected officials when they are on patrol. The gendarmes and police are also asked to accompany “with care the elected officials who file a complaint and to facilitate this process by going directly to the town hall or to any other place of their convenience”.

Social networks will also need to be monitored more to detect hate messages and report them immediately. These instructions come as new health restrictions have been announced by the government and their discussion in Parliament is likely to lead to threats, or even acts of action against elected officials, writes Gérald Darmanin. He therefore calls for the necessary vigilance of the police.

Already last summer, parliamentarians in particular had been the subject of threats and numerous malicious acts during the implementation of the health pass.
