At least 500 rioters attacked the police on Sunday in the area around the Rudolf Harbig Stadium massively with pyrotechnics, bottles and stones, as the Dresden Police Department announced. Media representatives were also attacked. The police used irritants and water cannons against the rioters.
Eleven police officers were reportedly injured and at least 30 people were arrested. By the evening, 17 preliminary investigations had been initiated for, among other things, serious breach of the peace, bodily harm, damage to property and violation of the Explosives Act.
“It is regrettable that the sporting success of Dynamo Dresden is overshadowed by these dismaying images,” said police chief Jörg Kubiessa. Dynamo Dresden made their return to the second Bundesliga perfect with a 4-0 win against Türkgücü Munich.
Celebration turns to violence
There were calls in the online networks to celebrate the resurgence of Dynamo Dresden at the stadium. According to the police, more than 4,000 people gathered near the stadium. Pyrotechnics were repeatedly burned down. The police’s requests to leave the area were not followed by the crowd.
After the police and their vehicles were suddenly pelted with pyrotechnics, the situation reportedly escalated. The attackers also tried to break through the police line in the direction of the stadium. According to the police, around 1,100 officers were on duty. (SDA)
