Attal’s popularity declines one month after his appointment


The new Prime Minister Gabriel Attal records a drop in his popularity, one month after his appointment, even if it remains significantly higher than that of Emmanuel Macron according to the Ifop monthly barometer for the JDD.

52% of French people say they are unhappy

According to this survey, carried out from February 7 to 15, 52% of French people (+ 6 points) are dissatisfied with Gabriel Attal compared to 48% satisfied. In the previous survey, carried out in the days following his appointment on January 9, 49% of French people were satisfied, 46% dissatisfied and 5% without an opinion. For its part, Emmanuel Macron’s popularity is down three points to 71% dissatisfied compared to 29% satisfied.

The survey was conducted among a sample of 1,993 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over, by self-administered online questionnaire from February 7 to 15, 2024.

65% unfavorable opinions for Emmanuel Macron

In another survey, conducted by Ipsos for La Tribune Sunday, Gabriel Attal’s popularity rating is increasing (40%, +3 points) and is at levels higher than his predecessors Edouard Philippe, Jean Castex and Elisabeth Borne following their appointment. But his unpopularity rating increases more sharply (45%, +8 points). Gabriel Attal is highly appreciated by Renaissance-Modem-Horizons supporters (86% favorable opinion, +8 points) but also by LR-UDI supporters with 63% favorable opinions (+10 points).

His rating also remains significantly higher than that of Emmanuel Macron which stabilizes with 30% favorable opinions and 65% unfavorable opinions. According to Ipsos, this stability “conceals significant disparities depending on political proximity”: the President of the Republic is falling sharply on the left (-11 points) and is making clear progress among right-wing supporters (+15 points).

This survey was carried out from February 13 to 15 among 1,000 people, constituting a national sample representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
