Augmented reality contact lenses, what advances? Mojo Vision gives its news

In the galaxy of new technologies, we are rarely at the end of our surprises. Revealed two years ago, smart contact lenses, Mojo Lens, manufactured by the start-up Mojo Vision, aim to change our daily lives. But, after a few months of silence, a brand new prototype has just emerged.

Is what is only possible in science fiction films one day destined to become reality? That’s what Mojo Vision is committed to making possible over the next few years. To begin with, it unveils a brand new prototype of its augmented reality lenses.

Mojo Vision, augmented reality at your fingertips

Unveiled for the very first time in January 2020, during CES, the famous exhibition dedicated to new technologies, these smart contact lenses have the ambition to give life to a new world: that of ” invisible computing “. Designed primarily with the intention of meeting a medical need for visually impaired people, these lenses carry with them augmented reality technology capable of appealing to a variety of profiles.

If this project has been relatively discreet since its announcement, the company has nevertheless communicated in dribs and drabs some advances in its revolutionary lens prototype. In particular, we learned that Mojo Vision had raised an additional $45 million in funding from several companies, bringing the total to more than $200 million in funding. And, with a view to attracting as many markets as possible, the company has revealed that it is partnering with various fitness brands, including Adidas Running.

A prototype that is progressing well

Mojo Vision took advantage of the start of 2022 to give news of its Lenses. The company has therefore unveiled a brand new prototype of its augmented reality contact lens technology.

Equipped with a 0.5 millimeter microLED screen with a density of 14,000 pixels per inch and powered by an ARM Core M0 processor, the Mojo Lenses have an eye tracking system directly integrated into the lens. In order to ensure optimal gaze tracking, the latter uses an accelerometer, a gyroscope or even a magnetometer. It would be a real feat in terms of miniaturization, if this draft were to lead to a finished product, especially since the lens also has its own operating system.

With such a project which, let’s remember, is still only at the prototype stage, Mojo Vision is fully aware of the impact that its Lenses could have on our daily lives in the more or less near future. Where some might legitimately think that this technology will not land before the next ten or twenty years, the company’s ambition is indeed to achieve this in the relatively near future. While waiting to learn more, we will carefully observe the progress that the start-up will make in order to see whether or not it will manage to keep its many promises.
