Always in search of disruptive technologies, Creative presents its new Aurvana Ace and Aurvana Ace 2 headphones, both of which feature MEMS speakers. Previously used in the aeronautical, automotive or medical sectors, this technology is being used for the first time in true wireless headphones.

MEMS speakers: the future of true wireless headphones?

MEMS systems (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems or micro electromechanical systems in French) are electronic chips, generally made of silicon, which have mechanical properties which can, for example, be used to make air vibrate and therefore produce sound.

The advantage of MEMS loudspeakers over conventional dynamic loudspeakers is that they are lighter, take up less space and are much more energy efficient. Headphones equipped with such systems should therefore ultimately be smaller, lighter and have better battery life.

The other advantage of MEMS speakers compared to their dynamic ancestors is that they operate using electrical pulses, and not using a magnetic field. As a reminder, a dynamic speaker consists of a coil which reacts with a magnet causing a membrane to vibrate. MEMS systems should therefore be free from any unwanted distortions or vibrations that can sometimes occur on dynamic systems. In fact, the sound reproduction should theoretically be much more precise with MEMS speakers.

Aurvana Ace and Aurvana Ace 2

However, the technology does not seem quite up to par since the Aurvana Ace may well be equipped with MEMS speakers, but they also feature more traditional 10mm dynamic speakers. This dual-speaker set is supposed to enable “precise and incredibly faithful sound reproduction”, dixit Song Siow Hui, CEO of Creative.

Many on-board features

Beyond these MEMS speakers, the Aurvana Ace are very classic headphones, but which include many features. The headphones are equipped with six microphones which allow you to benefit from active noise reduction and a mode for listening to surrounding sounds. They also include a Qualcomm chip used for voice processing during calls.

Bluetooth LE Audio compatible, the headphones support a range of codecs: SBC, AAC, AptX, AptX Adaptive and LC3. Battery life is announced at 24 hours with the case and the headphones are IPX5 certified.

Price & availability

The Aurvana Ace are already available at a price of €149.99. The Aurvana Ace 2 are distinguished by a different transparent and copper finish, an adaptive noise reduction mode and support for the aptX Lossless codec. These differences have a price: €179.99.
