Australia sets temperature record in 62 years

SINGAPORE, Jan 14 (Reuters) – Australian authorities advised people not to go out on Friday as a heat wave from the northwest coast sent temperatures soaring above 50 degrees Celsius, the highest since 62 years old.

Scientists and environmental activists are warning that global warming, caused by greenhouse gas emissions, will very quickly spiral out of control.

Known for its high temperatures and drought, the Pilbara mining region in the north-west recorded record heat on Thursday, as the temperature this time of year traditionally sits between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius. (Report Kanupriya Kapoor; French version Jean Terzian)
