Australia has not been a particularly successful place for Max Verstappen so far. The reigning world champion achieved his best result in 2019 with a 3rd place. But the chances are now good that the Dutchman will also clinch his first win in Melbourne on Sunday and help Red Bull to their first success “Down Under” since 2011.

In qualifying, Verstappen was the first driver to break the 1:17 mark with his last fast lap. This feat was otherwise only achieved by George Russell in a surprisingly powerful Mercedes. The Brit lost a little more than 2 tenths of the best time and will start the race alongside pole setter Verstappen. His compatriot and teammate Lewis Hamilton was happy about grid position 3.

Bottas and Zhou far behind

The Spaniard Fernando Alonso, currently third in the World Championship standings, had to be satisfied with fourth place in the Aston Martin. Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz/ESP and Charles Leclerc/MON finished 5th and 7th. For the Mexican Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull, qualifying was already over in the first part after a crash into the gravel trap.

Perez will start Sunday’s race from 20th place on the grid. Next to him will be Valtteri Bottas in the Alfa Romeo. The Finn had no chance in the first part of qualifying in 19th place. His Chinese team-mate Guanyu Zhou, who finished 17th, fared only marginally better.
