Australian journalist Cheng Lei is on trial in China

Australian Cheng Lei has been in prison in China for a year and a half. She is due in court next week.

(dpa) A year and a half after her arrest, the Australian journalist Cheng Lei, who worked for China’s state television, will be put on trial in Beijing on Thursday (March 31). The Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Saturday that it had been informed of the date by the Chinese side. The prosecution accuses her of giving state secrets abroad. If convicted, the maximum penalty is life imprisonment.
