Mandatory black box
The European Union imposes new regulations on safety equipment: in the lead, a black box to record the data of an accident and an intelligent cruise control. The black box will record the 30 seconds before the accident, and the 10 seconds that follow.
Thus, driving data will be recorded: driving speed, acceleration, braking, wearing of seat belts, etc. This data will make it possible to assist justice during trials or will be used for insurance purposes. Do not panic, however, the data from the black box will not be freely accessible and can only be extracted on the request of justice.
Smart cruise control
New cars will also have to be fitted with intelligent cruise control. This system is not the simple regulator that we already know: it alerts the driver when he exceeds the authorized speed, but if the latter does not reduce the pace, the regulator can impose a progressive deceleration or harden the pedal. acceleration. The regulator is informed of the imposed speed thanks to a camera which reads the signs on the road.
The imposition of these new regulations aims to limit accidents and better protect vulnerable users, such as pedestrians or cyclists. Automobile clubs are worried about a substantial increase in the cost of producing cars, but the Automobile Platform (PFA) reassures: the additional cost will not significantly inflate the bill.
Other equipment became mandatory for new cars on July 6: a driver drowsiness alert system, an alcohol ignition interlock, a reverse gear detection system… None of these regulations apply to vehicles already in circulation .
