  • The authoritarian Venezuelan government and parts of the South American country’s opposition have agreed on a date for the presidential election.
  • It is scheduled to take place in the second half of 2024.
  • Both camps have signed an agreement.

Accordingly, they are allowed to freely and independently choose their candidate, as stated in an agreement signed after negotiations in the Caribbean state of Barbados. The opposition wants to nominate someone on Sunday.

The election will be monitored by observers from the European Union and the United Nations, among others. Both sides also committed to conducting a fair election campaign and recognizing the election results.

The last election in 2018 was highly controversial

Left-wing President Nicolás Maduro has ruled Venezuela for over ten years. He was initially sworn in as interim president in March 2013 after the death of his predecessor Hugo Chávez. In an early election a month later he was elected head of state with a narrow majority. In 2018 he was confirmed in office in a controversial election. Many countries did not recognize the vote.

Venezuela has been in a serious political crisis for years. President Maduro is cracking down on government opponents and has banned several leading opposition figures from political activity. Economically, the once rich country suffers from mismanagement, corruption and sanctions. According to the UN, more than seven million people have left the country in recent years because of poverty and violence.
