At 6 p.m., traffic was backed up for a kilometer in front of the Gotthard north portal on the A2 motorway.
The waiting time is up to 10 minutes.
Over the course of the day, the traffic jam had grown to up to 14 kilometers with a waiting time of over two hours.
The Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS) cites traffic congestion as the reason for the traffic jam, as it writes on the short message service X, formerly Twitter.
Shortly after midday, vehicles piled up for 14 kilometers. Motorists therefore needed almost two and a half hours longer for the section of the A2 between Erstfeld UR and Göschenen UR than in normal traffic conditions, as the Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS) wrote on X.
A column had already formed in front of the tunnel early in the morning and by shortly after 7 a.m. its length had grown to ten kilometers. After that, the length of the traffic jam initially decreased, but increased rapidly again after 10 a.m.
The start of the holidays in many places
The school holidays began on Saturday in eleven cantons, and in some Bernese communities children and young people had already had school off last week. The holidays will begin next weekend in nine other cantons. Accordingly, traffic jams on the Gotthard are to be expected again.
