Avatar 2 is getting closer to Titanic at the US box office

Still at the top of the American box office, despite the resistance of “Puss in Boots 2”, “Avatar – The Way of the Water” is fast approaching the scores of “Titanic”. In the United States as in the rest of the world.

1 – Avatar – The Waterway: $15,700,000 (cumulative: $620,580,771)

2 – Puss in Boots 2: $10,621,000 (total: $140,835,910)

3 – The Worst Neighbor in the World: $6,751,000 (cumulative: $46,053,864)

4 – M3GAN: $6,371,000 (total: $82,274,725)

5 – Pathaan: $5,947,369 (cumulative: $8,548,444)

6 – Missing: $5,675,000 (total: $17,569,417)

7 – Mayday: $3,825,000 (cumulative: $25,374,765)

8 – Infinity Pool: $2,725,000 (New)

9 – Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist: $2,362,077 (total: $2,972,651)

10 – The Wandering Earth II: $1,355,000 (New)

Since mid-December, the weeks follow each other and look alike at the American box office: every Sunday evening, it is Avatar – The Way of the Water which prances in the lead and does not suffer from any competition. The weekend of January 27-29 was no exception, with over $15 million added, bringing its local tally to 620,580,771.

That makes him the 11th highest-grossing player of all time in the United States, behind Avengers, Jurassic World and Titanic, which he could overtake in the days to come.

Better: James Cameron is also about to fight himself in the rest of the world, because the Na’vis are on track to steal third place in the ranking of the biggest hits of all time from Jack and Rose… who will benefit of the release of their film, at the beginning of February, to make resistance.

It’s 2023, and all the competition is outpaced by Avatar – The Waterway. All ? No ! An irreducible feline resists again and again against the steamroller.

And Puss in Boots 2, since it’s about him, shows better stability than the king of the box office, with receipts 10% lower than last week, against 22% on the side from Pandora.

Released a week before Avatar 2 in the United States, the spin-off of Shrek retains second place in the weekly ranking, ahead of The worst neighbor in the world with Tom Hanks, the highly profitable M3GAN (82 million dollars in revenue to date on American soil, for a budget of 12) or the new Pathaan from India.

More generally, this American box office is quite calm and unsurprising. And it will probably be necessary to wait for the release of Ant-Man 3 (and the start of Phase V of the MCU), in mid-February, for things to really move. In the meantime, Missing loses two places and Mayday one.

To find a bit of spectacle, you actually have to get out of the Top 10 to see a very nice rebound from Oscar-nominated films.

As such, the prize goes to Vivre and Les Banshees d’Inisherin, which respectively show +402 and +382% in revenue compared to last week, against “only” 167 for Women Talking, 140 for Tár and 73 for The Fabelmans. A good omen for future winners?
