Avatar 3: James Cameron gives news of the film expected in 2025… and of Avatar 4

While it is expected in theaters at the end of 2025, Avatar 3whose main filming ended a few years ago, should have the cameras rolling again, according to James Cameron.

The American director has indeed given news of this sequel, and even the next Avatar 4on the occasion of the Saturn Awards ceremony which took place last weekend.

Still a few scenes to film

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña and the rest of the franchise’s cast Avatar are therefore preparing to take a tour on Pandora again this year while a few scenes ofAvatar 3 still need to be turned. Additional filming which is common on this type of big production, as Cameron explained:

“Avatar 3 is almost in the can. We still have a few shots to film but that only represents the last 2 or 3% of the film, and in June we will shoot some live-action shots to complete it all. We also shot a quarter of Avatar 4“, specified the director before explaining that the post-production ofAvatar 3 was already well advanced.

“We are working on visual effects, which is a huge amount of work. I’m going to need every second between now and release day to finish this movie“, concluded the filmmaker.

The art of technology

If it was necessary to wait more than ten years between the release ofAvatar (2009) and its sequel Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) so that the technical needs of the film are met, the rest of the saga will not take as long to see the light of day.

Cameron also took stock of the subject: “The technology is really there now and allows us to do what we need to do. We’re making small improvements as we go along, but here we are. The fact is that we’ve taken a step back, that’s why we We spent seven years developing it and four years shooting the two films together.“

“It’s not about technology, it’s about the minds and eyes of computer artists”explained the director. “It’s a very creative process, it’s art. Right now, thousands of people are involved and directing the orchestra to make everything perfect.”

For the moment without official title, Avatar 3 is expected in cinemas on December 17, 2025. Will come next Avatar 4on December 19, 2029, and Avatar 5December 17, 2031. And maybe more?
