With Avatar – Departure for Pandora, director James Cameron started a visually stunning science fiction fantasy film series in 2009 that is still one of the most successful films worldwide to this day. In 2022, after a long break, a sequel finally followed with “Avatar: The Way of Water”.

The “Avatar” films by year of release

The first part of the science fiction film series “Avatar – Departure for Pandora” takes place in the year 2154 and shows how people on earth struggle with a scarcity of resources. Only the raw material “Unobtainium” can help, which can be found in Pandora.
In order to convince the residents of Na’vi of their plan, the former US marine Jake Sully is sent to the earth-like moon. There, however, he encounters massive resistance.

In the sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water”, former soldier Jake Sully has been living with the Na’vi for ten years and has started his own family with three children. People still want to mine important raw materials in Pandora and are once again sending many spaceships to one day colonize the Earth-like moon.
Jake and his family then have to leave their jungle home and seek refuge with another Na’vi tribe. The Metkayina people take them in, but the family members first have to get used to the new water world and its challenges. Besides, people are still on their trail.

The third film will be titled “Avatar: The Seed Bearer” and will be released at the end of 2025. Very little is known about the plot of “Avatar 3” as there were actually supposed to be 4 “Avatar” films. The extensive script for part 2 was shared and will therefore be continued in part 3, making “Avatar 3” the second half of part 2.
In the third part, as in all other “Avatar” films, Miles Quaritch will return as the antagonist and the family of Jake Sully and Neytiri will continue to be the focus. In addition, the so-called “Ash People” are said to be a new Na’vi tribe, who, in contrast to the Metkayina and the Omatikaya, are not said to be quite as peaceful and good-natured.

So far not much is known about the title and plot of the fourth Avatar film. This part will continue to be about Jake Sully and Neytiri’s family. According to director Cameron, actress Sigourney Weaver will also return as Kiri Sully.

The fifth and final part of the “Avatar” series will be about the Na’vi leaving Pandora and going to Earth. It remains to be seen whether this will be a permanent stay or just a visit.
