Away with the charging cable? Thanks to Android 15, you can probably power your smartphone wirelessly

Being able to charge your own cell phone wirelessly is a convenience that many people no longer want to be without. So far, the Qi standard has dominated the market in this area, but the upcoming Android 15 version of the well-known operating system could change that. Android will now offer its own standard for wireless charging.

According to a report from the technology website Android Authority, those responsible for Android are working on a feature called “NfcCharging”. They took relevant information from the code of the beta for Android 15. The name already suggests that NFC technology will be used for wireless charging. Most higher-priced Android devices already have the necessary hardware for this.

Wireless charging via NFC has been possible since 2020, but the corresponding devices must also support this option. This could soon be the case for Android phones. However, you shouldn’t rush to take the charging cable of your premium cell phone to the recycling center.

Poor performance, Android

The charging function via NFC is limited to an output of one watt. This means that the wireless Android charging function would be significantly slower than its Qi counterpart (around 15 watts). With this low power, it would probably take more than a night to fully charge your smartphone.

There is no exact release date for Android 15 yet, but the first major presentation is expected in May 2024. It is already known which cell phones will receive the Android 15 update. While the final version is still being worked on, you can at least try out the test version of Android 15.
