Not sure that the market portable console be large enough to accommodate so many new machines.

In quick succession, two of the most prominent Chinese portable console design companies announced the adoption of AMD’s latest, a Ryzen 8000 series processor.

The Ryzen 7 8840U had already been announced by AMD and quickly presented through a few mini-PCs. Today, it is therefore the portable consoles which are abandoning its predecessor, the widespread 7840U.

Two versions of the AYANEO FLIP

While there is still almost a week left for the Indiegogo campaign (crowdfunding) for its Slide console, AYANEO is already making new announcements and is therefore increasing the number of references a little more.

This time, we are talking about the FLIP DS version. A console which had already been announced a few weeks ago and which adopts the format clamshell, so popular on the Nintendo DS and 3DS. The FLIP DS is also very close to these two machines from the Japanese company with a main screen and a second screen placed at the level of the controllers.

This second screen, with a diagonal of 3.5 inches, seems more designed to provide additional data to the user, such as, for example, information monitoring the state of the machine.

GPD also on the spot

At the heart of the machine, it is therefore the presence of a Ryzen 8000 series which remains the main attraction. The Ryzen 7 8840U is quite similar to the 7840U used previously. The essential difference lies in the integration of the XDNA1 artificial intelligence unit, the scope of which remains to be measured.

AYANEO is however not the only one to look at this new chip and GPD is also announcing a model close to the FLIP DS. A model that remains in format clamshell, the GPD Win Mini. With the console open, however, it is not a second screen that is revealed, but a rather complete keyboard. This gives the beast a miniature laptop feel.

If the Ryzen 7 7840U has achieved great success, the future of the Ryzen 7 8840U is more uncertain. The processor differs little from its predecessor – it is still Zen 4/RDNA 3 – and AMD is reportedly planning Zen 5/RDNA 3.5 APUs for 2024.
