Netflix returns to 1997 in a new “Terminator” series and once again declares war on Skynet. However, we have to do without Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800.

- If you were out and about in Los Angeles in the 1990s, you probably ran into at least one Terminator.
- The new Netflix production “Terminator – The Anime Series” sends another killer robot back in time.
- However, the plot of the films should not be changed.
With every new “Terminator” production, it becomes harder to keep track of the time travel confusion. But this is mainly because many films overwrite each other and therefore contradict each other. Now you have to decide for yourself which films you consider to be canon and which stories you prefer to ignore.
Even if new “Terminator” films are only a matter of time, at least Arnold Schwarzenegger has left the franchise behind. This makes it a little easier for the series to move away from the familiar plot and tell other stories about the fight against Skynet – like Netflix’s new “Terminator” series is doing.
Back to the past
“Terminator – The Anime Series” is not the first “Terminator” series, “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” secured this honor, but it is the first animated series from the science fiction franchise. Netflix’s official description states:
In the future, a war has been raging for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. In 1997, the AI known as Skynet gains consciousness and begins its war against humanity. Caught between the future and the past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee, who is working to introduce a new AI system to counter Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm grapples with the moral dilemmas of his creation, he is hunted from the future by a relentless assassin who changes the fate of his three children forever.
Sounds like a pretty typical “Terminator” story, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. There is currently no start date, but Masashi Kudō is the director of “Terminator – The Anime Series”, who you may know from his work on the anime “Bleach”.
