A few days before the Oscars, the seventh art shone in the United Kingdom. The 77th edition of the BAFTAs, the famous British Academy Film Awards, took place on Sunday February 18, 2024 at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Without surprise, Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan won the majority of awards with seven awards in total, including best film. Nominated in seven categories, Anatomy of a fall by Justine Triet achieves a less exceptional performance than at the Golden Globes, the Cannes Film Festival or the 2023 European Film Awards.
Anatomy of a fall actually only won one statuette on the evening of the 2024 BAFTAs, that of best screenplay. By going on stage at the Royal Festival Hall in London, director Justine Triet made the members of the assembly howl with laughter, alongside her husband Arthur Harari – co-writer of the legal feature film. “The last time I came to London, a woman said to me, ‘Thank you, because after seeing your film I called my ex and told him to go see it so he can understand why. I dumped himshe says. Someone else asked me if I put a microphone in my kitchen for inspiration. We never know why we are making a film, but our intention was not to encourage people to share their intimacy with us. Yet they did it. Sometimes people say that they experienced what they saw in the film and I want to make a statement tonight to assure you that this is indeed fiction and that the two of us are okay quite good actually.”
Anatomy of a fall may do better at the Oscars, with the film being nominated in five categories. The BAFTA ceremony was dominated by Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan and by Poor creatures by Yorgos Lanthimos.
