BEIJING (Reuters) – Ernie Bot, China’s Baidu’s chatbot, similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has more than 100 million users, said Wang Haifeng, the internet giant’s chief technology officer.
Baidu opened access to Ernie Bot to the public in August. The official launch was preceded by a partial presentation and a trial period of more than five months during which selected users were able to test the capabilities of the chatbot.

Analysts say the unconvincing partial unveiling in March still gave the company an advantage in a market now saturated with dozens of competitors, as Chinese technology companies seek to develop their own artificial intelligence chatbots. (AI) generative.

ChatGPT, backed by Microsoft and launched in late 2022, became the world’s fastest-growing software in a span of six months.

According to a ranking released Thursday by SuperCLUE, which rates chatbots powered by generative AI, Ernie Bot leads all Chinese robots. Its score of 79.02, however, is more than 10 points lower than that of the latest version of ChatGPT.
