Bandai brings back the Tamagotchi. The cult toy appears with new functions, WLAN and connection to the metaverse.

Who would have expected a new Tamagotchi in 2023? What could not be missing in any school bag in the mid-90s has long since disappeared, at least in Germany. Although the original Tamagotchi received a few successors, they only played a minor role. That could change now, because Bandai brings back its iconic toy – with some interesting innovations.
In a press release, Bandai announced “Tamagotchi Uni” that would fundamentally change the way people interact. With the “Tamaverse”, Bandai is launching its own metaverse for digital pets.
Tamagotchi fans can meet here and play together in the Tama Arena and at Tama parties. In the arena, you can work with or compete against other Tamagotchi characters. At the Tama parties, on the other hand, you can talk to and get to know characters from other players.

In addition, there is a Tama travel function, among other things. Here you can choose a tour and go on a world tour with your pet. In the Tama fashion section, you can share your character’s outfit with the whole world. The Tamagotchi itself also gets a bunch of new features.
The digital pets can now be personalized, allowing you to create your own characters. Appearance and personality can be adapted to your own preferences. There are more than 20 characters in total, and activities can be designed with the pets themselves. Thanks to a WLAN connection, updates and optional content can also be downloaded.

The Tamagotchi Uni can be used in seven languages and recharged via USB-C. There will be different colored straps so the toy can be worn like a smartwatch. Lanyards will also be available. The Tamagotchi Uni will go on sale July 15 for $59.99 (EUR price yet unknown).
