Schalke fails against basement child Kiel
At the end of the 19th matchday of the 2nd Bundesliga, FC Schalke did not get beyond a draw against Holstein Kiel from the bottom of the table. Only goal scorer Terodde can be relied on again. Meanwhile, FC Heidenheim uses the blunders of the competition and jumps to third place.

Bundesliga relegated Schalle 04 missed the leap to relegation place third in the 2nd Bundesliga. Despite a largely dominant style of play, the Gelsenkircheners did not get past 1-1 (0-0) against Holstein Kiel
Alexander Mühling put the guests ahead in the 67th minute with a remarkable long-range shot. Six minutes later, striker Simon Terodde equalized with his 13th goal of the season. For the North Germans, the appearance in Gelsenkirchen was the first competitive game at Schalke in 81 years. Terodde could have put the hosts ahead in the fifth minute, but only hit the crossbar from close range. Half an hour later, Salif Sané failed with a long-range shot by Kiel goalkeeper Thomas Dähne.
Seconds before the half-time whistle there was a threat in front of the Schalke goal, but Martin Fraisl was able to save a free-kick from Mikkel Kirkeskov for a corner. Even after the change of sides, coach Dimitrios Grammozis’ team was the superior team, but there were initially no more chances to score. Only after the two goals did the game become more lively and exciting again.
1. FC Heidenheim – FC Ingolstadt 04 2: 1 (1: 0)
1. FC Heidenheim used the blunders of the competition in the promotion race. With the 2:1 (1:0) against FC Ingolstadt at the bottom, coach Frank Schmidt’s team celebrated their fifth win from the past six games and conquered the relegation rank. Former Ingolstadt Robert Leipertz (30th) and Tobias Mohr (51st) ensured the success.
Ingolstadt suffered another setback under new coach Rüdiger Rehm after beating Dresden (3-0) at the end of the year. Despite an increase in performance after the break and Christian Gebauer’s goal (47th), it was not enough to get a point. The Schanzer continue to slide towards the direct descent. Heidenheim controlled the game in front of 500 fans in the first round. The FCH did not shine at all, but were rewarded for the significant increase in ball possession against pale guests with Leipertz’s header.
Ingolstadt responded after the break but fell behind again due to a mistake by Dejan Stojanovic. The FCI goalkeeper didn’t look good after a harmless long-range shot by Mohr. In the final phase, an open game developed with chances for both sides.
SV Sandhausen – SSV Jahn Regensburg 0:3 (0:2)
New year, old sorrow: SV Sandhausen is still deep in the relegation battle due to its weakness at home. The team of coach Alois Schwartz lost 0:3 (0:2) to Jahn Regensburg and without a home win this season is still on the relegation rank. The lead to a direct relegation zone is only two points.
Steve Breitkreuz (11th), Leon Guwara (33rd) and Carlo Boukhalfa (52nd) ensured the success of the guests, who had recently suffered three defeats in a row. Regensburg has the ascent relegation place in its sights again. The hosts started engaged in front of 500 spectators. New signing Ahmed Kutucu provided the first goal (4th). But the guests were more effective. After a missed chance by Andreas Albers, central defender Breitkreuz headed in the subsequent corner to take the lead. Three minutes later, the always dangerous Albers missed the opportunity for the second goal. Guwara then took care of this. Scott Kennedy almost raised a header against the post before the break (40′).
Schwartz reacted to his team’s poor performance and brought in two fresh attacking players in Charlison Benschop and Alexander Esswein at the beginning of the second half. But the guests scored again.
