What was society most concerned about from January to December? These words show what the priorities were in 2023.

Some words have taken society by storm this year and caused a lot of discussion – each month a different one came into focus. The language learning platform “Babbel” has collected a look back at some of the most moving events and the associated words from 2023.

From the less pleasant moments that had all eyes on a particular event to the fun – or sometimes dangerous – internet trends, we present them to you.

Words that moved us

Which words do you particularly remember this year? Was it the “parental allowance” or the competition for it Youth word of the year? Looking back on the past few months, there were many moments that moved us. A clear favorite: July. September also sums up a really bizarre event very simply.

There were a lot of nice memes. “ZDF,” for example, joked that the “You can see better with the second one” campaign wasn’t meant that way.

What will the word for December be?

With December still in full swing, there is no word yet for this month. We’re excited to see what viral trends or other events will lead to the final word of the year. Maybe it could be something nice and Christmassy – instead of, for example, the results of the PISA study. In any case, we’re keeping our eyes open.
