It’s done ! “Barbie” has become the 53rd billionaire film at the world box office, and allows its director to inscribe her name in the History of Cinema.

Life in plastic, it’s fantastic! Just days after celebrating her 40th birthday, Greta Gerwig received another gift. Perhaps not the most surprising given the trend observed since the film’s release, of course. But Barbie took advantage of the weekend to cross the milestone of one billion dollars in worldwide box office receipts.
It’s the second feature film of 2023 to achieve this after Super Mario Bros., and the fifty-third since Titanic got the ball rolling and hit that mark in 1998.
But the success of Barbie is historic, because Greta Gerwig becomes the first director to achieve it alone (Captain Marvel was co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, just like Frozen and its sequel, led by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck).
A record that also applies to the United States alone, where the feature film worn by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling retains the lead in the weekly box office.
With $459.4 million to date, according to the latest estimates, Barbie is the second biggest hit of the year (behind Super Mario Bros.), the twenty-fourth in history… and the first entirely made by a woman.
Having managed to resist the two big outings of the week (In very troubled waters and Ninja Turtles) by showing good solidity, Barbie can still aim higher, so much so that experts are counting on an end of course around 1.5 billion dollars in revenue worldwide. Which would make it the biggest hit of the year. Who would have believed it when the project was announced?
If the leader remains unchanged, his dolphin is no longer Oppenheimer but… a giant shark. The one who torments Jason Statham in Very Troubled Waters. A sequel which, even starting below the 45 million of its predecessor, successfully plunged into the deep end with 30 million greenbacks.
And therefore ahead of the latest opus dated Christopher Nolan. Who, like Barbie, panics the counters on her scale. Three-hour biopic dedicated to the father of the atomic bomb, without the kind of concepts thanks to which the filmmaker had been able to attract the general public in theaters, Oppenheimer is now approaching 230 million dollars on American soil.
This makes it the author’s biggest hit in the United States since The Dark Knight Rises. And his biggest score in the world since Interstellar, since he now accumulates nearly 553 million green tickets. By showing, as in France, an even more pronounced stability than that of Barbie, which can allow her to see even further.
Even if it is far from over, the summer of 2023 will remain one of surprises. Inspired by the attraction of the same name, The haunted mansion will end its run much closer to Jungle Cruise than to Pirates of the Caribbean, after a spectacular fall in its receipts (- 62.7% compared to the previous weekend) which places it in fifth position, far from the Big Four to which Ninja Turtles invited himself brilliantly.
Preceded by Sound of Freedom at the American box office, Mission: Impossible 7 is not the fireworks hoped for, even if its current score (151 million in the United States, 494 in the world) places it in the average of the saga of Tom Cruise, whose record this new opus will not beat .
Combined with the figures, honorable if not spectacular, ofIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny orElementarythe latest Pixar to date, the semi-disappointment of Mission: Impossible 7, to which summer seemed promised, isn’t it a sign of a change in Hollywood?
