Barbie: after the billion dollars, the race for the Oscars. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling nominated?

From dolls to gold statuettes? Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will be nominated by Warner Bros for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor at the next Oscars, for their roles in Barbie.

Soon an Oscar-winning Barbie? Variety reveals that Warner Bros. will nominate Greta Gerwig’s film in several categories at the next Oscars.

The biggest success of 2023 with $1.4 billion earned at the international box office, Barbie could compete for the Oscar for best film, best direction for Greta Gerwig, best actress for Margot Robbie, best actor in a supporting role for Ryan Gosling, best original screenplay, best sets, best costumes and best original song.

For the latter, the studio would still hesitate between two titles: What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish or I’m Just Ken by Andrew Wyatt and Mark Ronson played by Ryan Gosling.

From “just Ken” to “this Ken has an Oscar”?

“He is just Ken”… But this Ken could well win an Oscar for his interpretation of Barbie’s partner in the eponymous film by Greta Gerwig and for his singing talents that he has cultivated since his debut in the Mickey Mouse Club.

This would be the third appointment of Ryan Gosling at the Oscars after Half Nelson in 2007 and La La Land in 2017. The actor could also meet his partner from Damien Chazelle’s film, Emma Stone, since according to Variety, the latter should be proposed by Disney in the Best Actress category for her role in Poor Creatures by Yorgos Lanthimos, already awarded the Golden Lion at the 80th Venice Film Festival. Emma Stone would therefore be in direct competition with Margot Robbie.

In addition to the Best Actress statuette, the Barbie interpreter could also win Best Film in her capacity as producer. As a reminder, the Australian actress has already been nominated for the Oscars for Me, Tonya (as best actress) in 2018 and Scandal (Best supporting actress) in 2020.

Already nominated for an Oscar for Lady Bird (best original screenplay and best direction) in 2018 and The Daughters of Doctor March (best adapted screenplay) in 2023, Greta Gerwig would win his 3rd nomination with Barbie and should therefore compete for best direction and best original screenplay alongside his partner Noah Baumbach.

Barbie: an original or adapted scenario?

A category which also posed a problem for the producers of the feature film. The latter did not know whether to propose Barbie as an original screenplay or an adapted screenplay.

In the film, Barbie and Ken go out into the real world and discover flaws in their seemingly perfect lives, leading them to transform Barbieland and find their true purpose.

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach wrote an original screenplay that is neither based on a novel nor another adaptation. The credits also indicate that the film is “based on Mattel’s ‘Barbie'”, that is to say a doll created by a toy manufacturer and not on pre-existing written or filmed material.

The studio therefore chose to propose Barbie as best original screenplay.

Ruan Gosling, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig

According to Variety, Gerwig’s film should face Winter Break by Alexander Payne and Past Lives – Nos vies d’avant by Celine Song. Which would allow Barbie not to be in direct competition this time with Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan, since the latter is adapted from the book by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, “Robert Oppenheimer: Triumph and tragedy of a genius“.

However, the two films nicknamed “Barbenheimer” should face each other again in other categories including Best Supporting Actor since Robert Downey Jr. should be nominated by Universal, but also Best Film and Best Direction . The confrontation therefore continues…

The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 23 and the ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 10.
